The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Semiconductors recently visited the Plessey Semiconductors facility in Plymouth, highlighting the Group's ongoing commitment to engaging directly with innovative businesses that are helping to shape the future of the UK's semiconductor industry.
The visit was led by APPG Chair Ruth Jones MP and joined by the local Member of Parliament Rebecca Smith MP, whose constituency includes the Plessey site. The delegation met with senior members of the Plessey team to discuss the company's ambitions for future growth, its pipeline of projects and the opportunities that lie ahead for the UK semiconductor sector.
The discussions showcased the vital contribution that companies such as Plessey make to the UK's industrial strategy, technological leadership and economic prosperity. The delegation also explored opportunities for closer collaboration between industry and policymakers to ensure that the UK remains an attractive environment for semiconductor innovation, investment and manufacturing.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity for parliamentarians to see first-hand the cutting-edge work taking place at one of the UK's leading semiconductor facilities and to gain further insight into the sector's growing strategic importance. It also demonstrated the positive impact of the APPG's work in bringing together industry leaders and policymakers to raise awareness of the critical role semiconductors play in supporting the UK's future growth, resilience and technological capability.
As the APPG continues to expand its programme of activity, including the development of its forthcoming Defence and National Security Paper, visits such as this help to ensure that parliamentary discussions and policy recommendations are informed by the expertise, experience and ambitions of businesses operating across the UK's semiconductor ecosystem.
The APPG for Semiconductors remains committed to championing the sector, strengthening dialogue between industry and government, and supporting the policies needed to secure the UK's position as a global leader in semiconductor design, manufacturing and innovation.
Following on from the visit, the Chair of the APPG for Semiconductors, Ruth Jones MP, had this to say: “It was a pleasure to visit Plessey Semiconductors and see first-hand the innovative work being undertaken in Plymouth. The UK is home to a world-class semiconductor sector, and businesses such as Plessey demonstrate the talent, expertise and ambition that exist across the industry. We are grateful to the team for sharing their plans for the future and their insights into the opportunities ahead. The APPG is committed to ensuring that the semiconductor sector has a strong voice in Parliament and that policymakers understand the vital role it plays in driving economic growth, technological innovation and national resilience.”
