The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Semiconductors launched its new paper, Defence and National Security: Delivering a Sovereign Semiconductor Capability, at our parliamentary reception on Tuesday 15 September 2026, bringing together parliamentarians, ministers, defence leaders, industry experts and innovators to discuss the strategic importance of semiconductors to the United Kingdom's security, resilience and technological future.
The paper sets out expert recommendations to strengthen sovereign UK semiconductor capability and improve the resilience of defence-critical supply chains. It argues that semiconductors are essential to modern defence systems, underpinning everything from secure communications and intelligence capabilities to advanced sensing technologies, electronic warfare and AI-enabled systems.
While the UK possesses world-leading strengths in compound semiconductors, photonics and semiconductor design, the report highlights the need for closer alignment between defence, industrial and semiconductor policy. It recommends targeted action to strengthen sovereign capability, address skills shortages, improve supply-chain resilience and ensure the UK captures greater economic and strategic value from defence investment.
The paper concludes that semiconductors should be recognised as a strategic national capability, with trusted access to semiconductor technologies becoming increasingly important to the UK's future security, resilience and long-term economic growth. It sets out a road-map for strengthening the UK's position in key areas of semiconductor technology while working with trusted international partners to enhance national capability.

“Unlocking UK Economic Growth”
The All Party Parliamentary Group for Semiconductors launched its new paper Unlocking UK Economic Growth at a parliamentary reception on 2 February 2026 bringing together policymakers, industry leaders and experts to discuss the future of the UK semiconductor sector.
The paper sets out expert recommendations to ensure the UK Semiconductor Strategy is fully aligned with the Modern Industrial Strategy. Semiconductors are a foundational technology for economic growth productivity national security and resilience and must be treated as a strategic national capability.
Despite the UK’s strengths in research design and advanced technologies government support remains modest compared with international competitors. Targeted high impact policy interventions are essential to unlock private investment strengthen supply chains and secure the UK’s position in critical parts of the global semiconductor value chain.
The paper highlights the central role of semiconductors across key Industrial Strategy priorities including Advanced Manufacturing Clean Energy Defence Digital and Technologies and Life Sciences and concludes with clear recommendations to deliver long term economic and strategic advantage for the UK.
